Aga Town, Higashi-kanbara District, Niigata Prefecture, is a mountain village where traditional Japanese life and culture remain. This area – also known as ‘Okuaga’ – is surrounded by beautiful clear streams and breathtaking mountains, accented by heavy snowfall and blessed with many hot springs scattered throughout. Although there are no major tourist attractions, you can enjoy Aga’s beautiful natural scenery in all four seasons.
Niigata Prefecture is one of the leading producers of rice in all of Japan, in both quantity and quality. Aga Town is known to produce some of the finest and most delicious rice, as well as sake – Japanese rice wine – and koji – a type of fermented rice essential in many Japanese cuisines. Fermentation has been a staple practice in Aga Town since ancient times, and once a year a festival is held to celebrate this.

Aga Town has what’s known locally as the “Fox Fire” legend dating back centuries. Once a year, a festival called the ‘Fox Wedding Procession’ is held, and many people from all over Japan travel to attend. In the center of town, there is a tourist facility called ‘Kitsune no Yomeiri Yashiki’ or the ‘Fox Wedding Museum’.

Masks are mandatory at almost all public facilities in Aga Town, including restaurants, lodging facilities, and tourist sites, and hand sanitizer is available at the entrance.
