Aga Town, Higashi-kanbara District, Niigata Prefecture, is a mountain village where traditional Japanese life and culture remain. This area – also known as ‘Okuaga’ – is surrounded by beautiful clear streams and breathtaking mountains, accented by heavy snowfall and blessed with many hot springs scattered throughout. Although there are no major tourist attractions, you can enjoy Aga’s beautiful natural scenery in all four seasons.

Niigata Prefecture is one of the leading producers of rice in all of Japan, in both quantity and quality. Aga Town is known to produce some of the finest and most delicious rice, as well as sake – Japanese rice wine – and koji – a type of fermented rice essential in many Japanese cuisines. Fermentation has been a staple practice in Aga Town since ancient times, and once a year a festival is held to celebrate this.
